Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Penguin Classics Edition by Ruben Toledo from Refinery 29
Reading done over the summer is pure bliss for me... not having any other books (often books read over and over and over again to stay fresh for the kids) in rotation and free time to indulge my reading habit makes the summer that much sweeter. And a hammock in the back yard to enjoy while reading... perfection. So yes, I take my summer reading pretty seriously. Because this year has brought so many classics into the house... like these, these from March, and these too... ahem... I considered making this a summer of classics. However, there are so many good books out there that my plan is to read a bit of everything. Here is what I'm reading this summer...
First up, will be Amy Greene's Bloodroot. I started reading this and had to stop, it was just too good and I pictured myself reading it all in one sitting, I can't wait to get back into it.
Margaret Atwood is one of my absolute favorite authors and as I've just finished The Odyssey with my kids, I need to go back to The Penelopiad.
I also really need to go back to The Scarlet Letter, one of my favorite books when I was in high school and something I've apparently completely forgotten (I confused it with the horrible movie the other day at work, you know, the one with Demi Moore though I love Gary Oldman). A cardinal sin I assure you and penance will be paid as I re-read this favorite over the summer.
I'm also looking forward to Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native, which I've never read. How I managed to make it through more classes of Victorian lit than I can count without reading it is beyond me, but I can't wait to compare this to Tess of the D'urbervilles, one of my favorites.
Sing Them Home looks fantastic and has reviewed extremely well... I love novels that follow families over generations and this promises to do just that.
The Elegance of the Hedgehog is another book I started in the Spring and just had to put away in order to get things done. I love this book that is narrated by an apartment land-lady and a young girl who is extremely intelligent and slightly overlooked. It might be the book I grab after Bloodroot.
Anna Karenina is also a book I read in the summer while I was in high school and was mesmerized. Lady Chatterly's Lovers and Wuthering Heights are books that I've always loved and might find my way back to throughout the summer.
So that's what my summer reading is looking like... ambitious and neglectful of the sewing and classes and traveling and farmer's marketing and canning and gardening planned... but I love the very thought that the days are about to become completely mine, filled with whatever I choose for them to be filled with.
You might have noticed the new Goodreads (a facebook-blog type of application for book lovers like me) button on the heading bar at the top of the page. You can follow my summer reading over there... or better yet, join (friend me if you do!) and let me see what's in your book bag this summer... happy reading book lovers and happy summering summer lovers!
